ChatGPT and Reddit now face the EU's toughest online rules: regulation has reached AI platforms
Ars Technica reported that the EU has designated ChatGPT and Reddit as very large online platforms under the Digital Services Act — bringing the toughest obligations: independent audits, regular systemic-risk assessments, regulator reporting, and fines measured in percentages of global turnover. For conversational AI it is a precedent: until now the DSA regime covered social networks and marketplaces.
The regulator's logic is clear: when tens of millions of Europeans use a service, its influence on the information space rivals media, and accountability follows. The practical consequence for anyone building products on such platforms is that the rules can change from outside — from age restrictions to moderation and explainability requirements.
A Kazakhstani business, even one far from the EU market, should read the wind direction here. «Explain how your AI works and what data it uses» will gradually become standard in our contracts too — first with large customers and banks, then everywhere. Companies that already keep track of where and how AI runs in their operations, including AI agents in internal processes, will take this turn without emergency rebuilds.
