Kazakhstanis receive fake SMS about school admissions: seasonal fraud as a lesson for business
Kazakhstan has recorded a wave of fake SMS about admission to institutional schools: recipients get happy news and are led to a link or asked to "confirm their details". The timing is precise — during admissions season families are waiting for exactly such messages and click without thinking.
The mechanics are classic: joyful or alarming news plus urgency switches verification off. Today it's an "admission", tomorrow a "won tender", a "blocked account" or a "letter from the tax office": for businesses these blasts impersonate counterparties and state bodies, and AI tools have made them literate and plausible — spelling no longer gives the fake away.
A company's defense comes down to two habits. First: any action on incoming messages goes only through official channels typed in by hand, never through a link in an SMS. Second: short, regular staff briefings with live examples of seasonal schemes — people recognize what they've seen before. Half an hour at a stand-up is cheaper than a week spent clawing money back from scammers' accounts.
