Google gives publishers a new way to fight AI-driven traffic losses

Google introduced a new mechanism for publishers losing search referrals: the company acknowledged what the market has discussed for a long time — AI overviews and ready answers resolve a user's question right on the results page, and fewer people ever reach the websites. The tool is meant to give media new ways to monetize and retain audiences.

The story has long been bigger than the fate of the press. Informational pages, blogs, FAQ sections — the entire top of the funnel that businesses spent years building for search traffic now competes with an instant AI answer. Winning that competition with checkbox content is no longer possible.

For companies in Kazakhstan the takeaway is practical. First, measure a website by target actions — inquiries, calls, orders — rather than visits. Second, invest in what an AI answer cannot replace: your own data, calculators, real case studies, and direct channels such as newsletters and messengers. Treat search traffic as a rented asset — and steadily grow the assets you own.
