Kazakhstan's autumn draft: conscription lists are now formed by AI — algorithms enter state decisions about people

Kazakhstan's autumn conscription campaign has begun, and for the first time the draft lists are formed by AI: the algorithm consolidates data from state information systems and determines who is subject to the draft. Military offices receive ready lists instead of manually cross-checking card files.

It is a notable milestone in the algorithmization of the state: a machine now participates in decisions that directly concern specific people — and, by extension, their employers. Automation has a known flip side: an error in the source data is replicated systematically, and you end up arguing with "the algorithm's decision."

Two practical consequences follow for business. First, keep company and employee records in state systems — military registration, HR data, addresses — up to date, because they are now read not by an inspector once a year but by an algorithm continuously. Second, military record-keeping in organizations turns from a formality into a process watched automatically — best maintained as if an audit were running every day.
