Cybersecurity as office rent: why a protection subscription beats an in-house team for most businesses
ER10 published an analysis built on a vivid metaphor: cybersecurity for business is like office space. Nobody thinks of constructing their own building to house staff — they rent. Protection works the same way: an in-house security department with specialists, on-call shifts and tooling costs sums only large corporations can bear, while a subscription to a managed security service delivers round-the-clock monitoring for a fixed fee.
The context strengthens the argument: attacks are getting cheaper and automated with AI, which means they now reach small businesses that previously "had nothing worth stealing." A lone sysadmin who also handles the printers is a losing position against automated attacks. A subscription SOC spreads the cost of expertise and expensive tools across hundreds of clients.
For a company in Kazakhstan the practical algorithm is: calculate the cost of one hour of your business standing still; request subscription quotes from two or three local managed-security providers; compare with the salary of even one security specialist. For most companies under a couple hundred employees the arithmetic is unambiguous — as with offices, owning costs more than renting.
