Four major AI models went down at once: a rare outage exposed business's new dependency
Ars Technica recorded a rare event: four leading AI models — ChatGPT, Grok, Claude and Gemini — suffered outages that overlapped in time. The causes differed, but the effect was shared: for several hours much of the world lost its familiar AI tools, and social feeds filled with "work has stopped" complaints.
The reaction itself is the story: three years ago an unavailable chatbot was a curiosity; now it's an operational incident. AI has quietly moved from the "toy" category into infrastructure — like electricity, internet and card acquiring — and infrastructure demands failure plans.
For companies in Kazakhstan this is a cheap prompt to run a drill: list the processes AI is embedded in, and for each one answer what happens if it's unavailable for a day. Somewhere a manual workaround suffices; somewhere you need a second model from another vendor; and somewhere you'll discover that critical knowledge lives only in chats with the bot. Better to learn that in a drill than during the next outage.
