eGov and nearly all state websites went down for a while: what the outage means for business

Kazakhstan lived through a large-scale outage of its digital state: the eGov portal stopped opening, and with it nearly all government agency websites. Service was restored after a while, but for the hours of downtime signings, certificates, registrations — everything business is used to doing in a couple of clicks — hung in limbo.

The deeper the country goes digital, from public services to AI services, the more expensive every hour of shared-infrastructure downtime becomes. Tellingly, most companies do not even have a one-page instruction for such a day: staff simply wait, while deals and deadlines do not.

The practical takeaway for business in Kazakhstan: walk through your processes and mark the ones tied to eGov and digital signatures. Wherever a deadline is critical, design the workaround in advance — reschedule the signing, keep a paper duplicate, agree with the counterparty on moving the date. A one-page "what we do during an outage" memo takes an hour to write and can save a week's revenue.
