Meta puts robots to work in its data centers: physical automation catches up with digital

Ars Technica covered Meta's program to deploy robots in its own data centers. The machines take over routine physical operations: moving heavy equipment, working with racks, auxiliary maintenance tasks. A data center is the perfect proving ground: the environment is standardized, the floors are mapped, processes are described step by step, and the objects are uniform.

The sequence is telling. Companies first automated digital routine — request handling, document processing, monitoring — where AI agents have already become a everyday tool. Now the same logic descends to the physical level: if a process is repeatable and described, a machine can take it, whether it consists of bytes or boxes. Robots in Meta's data centers are not exotic — they are the next item on the same list.

For Kazakhstani businesses with warehouses, shops and logistics, the takeaway is practical: physical automation is getting cheaper along the same curve as digital did, and preparation is identical. Step one is not buying a robot but putting things in order: standardized storage locations, documented processes, digitized records. Companies that have this will plug robots in within months; the rest will first have to walk the boring part of the road.
