Shopify Lets AI Agents Complete Checkout
Shopify has extended its WebMCP support to checkout, so browser-based AI agents can now update order details and complete a purchase, not just browse products. The agent needs the buyer's explicit authorization — without it, the payment simply won't go through.
Until now, an AI agent in the browser could at best help pick a product, leaving checkout to a human — now the whole path from cart to payment can be handled by the agent itself. That shifts the balance in e-commerce: merchants must account not only for people looking at the screen, but also for automated assistants acting on their behalf.
Check how your online store or CRM confirms an order — are your processes ready for purchases placed by an agent instead of a person? Make sure the authorization rules for such actions are clear, so a suspicious transaction disguised as a normal order doesn't slip through. A similar principle already runs in 1Cifer: agents don't just answer questions but carry out whole processes, from assigning tasks to monitoring payments, catching anomalies a person might miss.
