Access to powerful AI models may be restricted: an Nvidia expert on what it means for Kazakhstan

An Nvidia expert, speaking to Digital Business, warned that access to the most powerful AI models and compute is increasingly a geopolitical instrument and may be restricted for entire countries. For Kazakhstan, which is building its own AI strategy, this is a risk to bake into plans early — from chip procurement to the choice of models for state and corporate systems.

The resilience recipe at country level is known: diversify suppliers, develop domestic infrastructure, keep open models as insurance. Tellingly, the warning comes from a company sitting at the very center of export controls — meaning even the beneficiaries of today's market consider the risk real.

For an individual company the lesson scales down intact. If your processes, products or AI agents are hard-wired to one specific model from one vendor, any change in access terms — pricing, legal or political — becomes your operational problem. The practice is simple: choose tools where the model can be swapped, and keep a tested alternative on hand for critical scenarios.
