Cursor launches code hosting — a direct challenge to GitHub
The company behind the popular AI editor Cursor launched its own code hosting platform, openly capitalizing on some developers' frustration with GitHub. The calculation is clear: Cursor has millions of users living in its editor, and code hosting is the natural extension that closes the work cycle inside one product.
It is part of a larger reshuffle of the developer tools market. AI companies that built audiences on editors and assistants are moving into adjacent niches — hosting, code review, deployment — while incumbents respond by embedding AI into their platforms. For the industry this is healthy: competition for developers means better free tiers, faster-arriving features and attentive support.
For Kazakh companies with development teams, the practical meaning of the moment is to compare terms in earnest. Development infrastructure has been chosen "by default" for years, and right now players fight for switchers, offering their best terms to new customers. A sane routine: review the tool stack with the team once a year, calculate cost per developer, and trial newcomers on a non-critical project — not bolting anywhere, but not paying for inertia for years either.
