Fake Identities Sell for $200 on the Dark Web
A new product has appeared on dark web marketplaces: fully fabricated digital identities designed to pass automated checks. Sellers call them “digital Frankensteins” — documents, photos and digital footprints from different real people are stitched into one convincing identity and sold starting at $200.
These profiles are built specifically to bypass KYC checks at banks, exchanges and online services: the system sees a formally correct passport, selfie and activity history pulled together from various data leaks. Automated screening checks that the data looks complete and properly formatted, not whether it's genuine — so it lets through exactly what an attentive human reviewer would flag.
If your business onboards clients or partners remotely — opening accounts, granting access, signing contracts from scanned documents — it's worth checking whether identity verification relies on automation alone. Early detection of anomalies and suspicious transactions is one of the tasks agents handle in 1Cifer: the system cross-checks data against transaction history and flags mismatches that are easy to miss in a stream of applications.
