The National Bank prepares Alatau City's financial ecosystem and scales digital assets
Kazakhstan's National Bank is preparing a financial ecosystem for Alatau City — a city conceived as a platform for next-generation technology — while scaling digital asset infrastructure in parallel. The project's contour includes the digital tenge, tokenized instruments and modern payment rails built into the urban environment from the start rather than bolted onto an old system.
The design should be read as a national-scale experiment: instead of rebuilding the whole country's financial system at once, the regulator is building a proving ground where new mechanisms — from digital asset settlements to programmable payments — are tested in a real but bounded environment. World practice shows that successful proving-ground solutions then replicate fast.
For business in Kazakhstan this means financial instruments "from the future" are worth studying now. Programmable payments can replace part of escrow and letters of credit; tokenization simplifies raising capital against assets; settlement in a central bank digital currency promises instant transfers without intermediaries. Companies that figure out in advance which of these mechanisms fit their business model will enter the new system first — and in financial innovation, the first movers traditionally get the best terms.
