OpenAI previews Ultrafast: a model up to 14x faster — and why speed changes the use cases

OpenAI presented a preview of Ultrafast — a mode in which the GPT-5.6 Sol model runs up to 14 times faster than standard. The company positions the novelty squarely at tasks where response latency is critical: voice assistants, interactive applications, real-time event stream processing.

Speed is an underrated parameter in AI. While a model thinks for five to ten seconds, a whole class of applications stays closed: a customer at the till won't wait, a voice dialogue with pauses falls apart, a conveyor won't stop for inference. A sub-second answer moves AI from the "ask and wait" category into "works invisibly, inside the process". Every model developer is now running the same latency race, so fast modes will soon be a market norm rather than one vendor's edge.

For business in Kazakhstan this is a reason to revisit the list of ideas rejected for AI sluggishness. A voice assistant on the inbound line that answers without awkward pauses; prompts for the cashier or teller at the moment of service; an order checked for errors between the click and the confirmation. The rule is simple: if a scenario was dropped with the words "AI is too slow", it's time to reconsider — the technology has changed.
